Mark Twain was an American writer, journalist, and publisher. Among his most famous novels are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its sequel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers. Most of his finest work includes many genres such as humor, satire, and philosophical fiction. Sketches New and Old is a wonderful collection of short stories like My Watch, The Jumping Frog, The Story of the Bad Little Boy, and Niagara.
Jack London was an American novelist, journalist and social activist. Pioneering the genre of magazine fiction and prototyping science fiction, he became one of the first writers, who gained worldwide fame and a large fortune. Lost Face is a collection of seven great short stories including Flush of Gold, The Passing of Marcus OBrien, The Wit of Porportuk, and Londons best known tale To Build a Fire.
The Mysterious Stranger and Other Stories unites nine of master American humorist Mark Twains most accomplished works. From tall tales of con mens tricks, such as the classic that brought him instant fame, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, to a man with no money (other than a 1,000,000 banknote that no one can cash), to an expose of greed and hypocrisy in perhaps his greatest short story, The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg, Twain showcases his notorious humor-skewering policemen, clergymen, politicians, bankers, and others-and displays his changing attitude toward human nature. The finale is the novella The Mysterious Stranger, a rarity for Mark Twain in which he turns his sardonic, freewheeling wit on eternal evil in a distant time and place--and conjures a memorable, tormenting conclusion.
For deft plotting, riotous inventiveness, unforgettable characters, and language that brilliantly captures the lively rhythms of American speech, no American writer comes close to Mark Twain. This sparkling anthology covers the entire span of Twains inimitable yarn-spinning, from his early broad comedy to the biting satire of his later years. Every one of his sixty stories is here: ranging from the frontier humor of The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, to the bitter vision of humankind in The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg, to the delightful hilarity of Is He Living or Is He Dead? Surging with Twains ebullient wit and penetrating insight into the follies of human nature, this volume is a vibrant summation of the career of-in the words of H. L. Mencken-the father of our national literature.
Oscar Wilde took London by storm with his first comedy, Lady Windermeres Fan. The combination of dazzling wit, subtle social criticism, sumptuous settings and the theme of a guilty secret proved a winner, both here and in his next three plays, A Woman of No Importance, An Ideal Husband, and his undisputed masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest. This volume includes all Wildes plays from his early tragedy Vera to the controversial Salome and the little known fragments, La Sainte Courtisane and A Florentine Tragedy. The edition affords a rare chance to see Wildes best known work in the context of his entire dramatic output, and to appreciate plays which have hitherto received scant critical attention. Wildes plays have never failed to delight audiences and are a lasting testimony to their authors supreme wit and theatrical genius.
Mark Twain (1835-1910) was an American writer, journalist, and publisher. Among his most famous novels are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its sequel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Most of his finest work includes many genres such as humor, satire, and philosophical fiction. Roughing It is a semi-autobiographical work that describes the travels of young Mark Twain through the Wild West during 1861-1867 along with his brother Orion Clemens. The book contains many adventures, including a visit to Salt Lake City, a journey to the Kingdom of Hawaii, and his beginnings as a writer. All with Twains excellent sense of humor, which later would become one of the key features of his writing.
